Technology growing in leaps and bounds

2 Comments 09 February 2006

I like to keep up with the latest research and technology developments that are happening around the world and I must say I’m amazed at how fast technology is growing these days.

I read on Softpedia news today that Universal Display Corporation announced yesterday the achievement of a full-color, active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) display prototype on flexible metal foil.

new electronic paper

This electronic paper is 0.1 mm thick and weights about 6 grams, compared to current competitors with glass-based LCD electronic papers which would be approximately 1.0-1.5 mm thick and weigh 20-30 grams.
Universal Display Corporation’s press release says that this prototype will contribute to the eventual development of the company’s proprietary Universal Communication Device, which would allow a user to unroll a thin, metal screen from a pen-like device.

Now, I can just imagine in a couple years time, when this becomes publicy available and affordable enough for the mass market, people walking around with a pen in their pocket then deciding, “I think I would like to find out whats the latest news in South Africa” or “I wonder how this train works”, well let me just take out my pen, roll out the AMOLED screen, connect wirelessly to the Internet, do a Google search and find out why not.

I think the Information Age has just become the Connectivity Age.
