Cape Town Slashes ICT budget

7 Comments 28 July 2006

[Cape Town | ITWeb, 28 July 2006] – Sharp cuts in the City of Cape Town’s IT budget will seriously hamper its ability to retain staff, perform routine maintenance and threaten its place as the country’s most ICT-centric city, says CIO Nirvesh Sooful. According to Sooful, the 2007 capital budget was slashed from a requested R75 million to R30 million, in what he describes as an “arbitrary mannerâ€?.

Great! You do know what that means for us? This will encourage the powers that be to look at FOSS business soltuions before prorietary solutuons licenses :) There’s gonna be so much less SAPping of the budget. Great oppurtunities lie ahead for everyone. Read the full Cape Town slashes ICT budget article.

I like the way you think! Opportunity in adversity. Yeah – less wastage, more efficiecy. FOSS and SaaS… just as long as their consultants are progressive enough to see things that way.

You guys should be aware of what is happening in your own City. The City of Cape Town is already a large user of Open Source. Unlike othr govt departments and various foundations that only talk about it, they are already using it on hundreds of desktops and servers.

TYFYC Kurt Hendricks – Of that I’m fully aware, it may be one of the reason that the WC gov is able to slash the budget without slashing the quality of service, what are your views?

  • Kurt Hendricks

The problem is that these guys are the only ones who seem to be trying to do real stuff on open source in govt. It’s a pity that their budgets get reduced, when all the other’s in govt, with massive budgets, and who are doing very little for OSS – and in some cases actively opposing it, have their budget’s untouched.
