Why South Africa’s broadband growth is lacking…

Comments 26 October 2006

The recently released OECD Broadband Statistics indicates that local broadband growth is nowhere near where it should be.

South Africa currently has around 350 000 broadband subscribers which translates into a local broadband penetration rate of just over 0.7%. The OECD Broadband Penetration rate is currently 15.5%, over 2200% higher than South Africa’s figure.

Wonder why South Africa’s broadband uptake is so low compared to the rest of the word except the obvious high price of connectivity for ADSL?

  • Did some ADSL pricing research becuase our wireless internet was a bit unsteady.
  • Telkom called us (thanks Giovanni) and said we will be called re: an installation date.
  • It is now two weeks later and Telkom have not called us again.

Why your Web AddiCT thinks the broadband uptake is slow: The only broadband supplier in South Africa’s service resembles a sloth with amnesia.
