Mobile Number Portability (MNP), What it is?

6 Comments 01 November 2006

Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which allows cell phone subscribers to migrate from one cellular provider to another without having to change numbers, was postponed twice by ICASA, but according to Vodacom, MTN and CellC they are now ready to implement the system.

No we have Virgin Mobile on the scene in South Africa too.

What it means to you is that if you have a vodacom/mtn/cellc/virgin number, are not happy with them, want to change to a new mobile service provider. You are now able to change between CellC, MTN, Vodacom and Virgin Mobile and take your number with you :)

For those prepiad user who are unable to access MXit with less than R1.00 airtime on vodacom network, you”ll be able to switch to another service provdier that allows you to chat on MXit with less than R1.00 airtime.
Hello, Competition. Now, if Telkom had any competition our ADSL would not take 6-8 weeks and many hours on hold to get DSL broadband installed.

Nomfundo, the problem is when I have a lot of people who call me on the same number it means that they won’t be able to contact me anymore. Unless I let everyone know everytime I change my simcard, or change my business cards, or change my contact details online or whatever.

If I’m in a contract I’m stilled locked in though anyway?

TYFYC Nomfundo & Uno – If you have a number that you use for business or personal purposes it is not always possible to switch sim cards. What happens when your clients, boss, family or friends need to get hodl or you urgently? Do you print all the number on your biz card? Or.. when you give your number to friends do you give them all 4 and ask them to try them all?

wanna do Mobile Number Portability (MNP)would like to change my service provider from cell c to vodacom and keep my number .
    how do I do that

The good people at Nashua Mobile who have my number tell me that in order to retain my number if I leave them, I will need to find another service provider. I couldn’t use a prepaid service, for example. Can anyone confirm the truth of this? It seems to me to fly in the face of the intentions of MNP – that the consumer can shop around for the best service without being penalised by having to change the number.
