Afrilingo – Breaking the language barrier

4 Comments 30 November 2006

Thabo OlivierA wow moment for Your Web AddiCT at the African ICT Achiever awards 2006 was meeting Thabo Olivier, Top ICT business man in Africa 2005. His company has created a mobile application called Afrilingo.

Your desire to understand and be understood in another language is now at your fingertips. It is our wish at Afrilingo that multi-lingualism be beneficial to you in all your endeavours; be they social, academic or business.

Afrilingo is here to help. It is a software program, and is available in all eleven official languages of South Africa.

The program helps the user to communicate immediately in Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa, Sesotho, Sesotho sa Leboa, Setswana, isiZulu, siSwati, isiNdebele, Xitsonga, Tshivenda. The vocabulary includes in excess of 3000 words and, together with the language module, allows you to pose hundreds of commands and requests. With regular use, sufficient knowledge of the spoken language will result in the program later being used for reference purposes only. The audio playback function assists the user with the correct pronunciation.

In true entrepreneur spirit he was demoing his mobile african langauge translation application (see image) to all seated around our table at the AFrican ICT Achiever awards 2006. I’d like to get my hands on this neat little app for your Mobile phone. Have a look at th Afrilingo website for more info. The site is very outdated so there is no news of the mobile app available :( Thabo, I know you read our blog (told me so yourself) please pop me an email.

Outdated yes, but read the mail&guardian online within the next 3 days!!!!!!! You guys just got a sneak preview about something that is not supposed to exist yet. I am also in two minds about going hi-tech with the website. 98% of the visitors to my site are green to IT, so I might keep it straight and simple. Re: update- long overdue. Raf… if i want to sell dogfood, what must i do …. ?

If you want to seel dog food, give people free puppies & let them choose the breed :)

TYFYC Thabo – This must be a first, We break a story about new Technology in Africa before the M&G or ITweb :)

Just because a website is hi-tech (google or idrive.co.za) does not mean it doesn’t have to be hi-touch. Beauty in simplicity or Keep It Straight & Simple as you put it.

    Hi Thabo

Based on when this comment was posted I would think that you would give more consideration to our recent discussion in Bloem and thereafter about your website.

I had you pinned as a man who embraces technology and his people which I thought is partly why your creation of technology is phenomenal – it is for the people and its is technology

I read your comment to Rafiq “I am also in two minds about going hi-tech with the website. 98% of the visitors to my site are green to IT, so I might keep it straight and simple.

Plain and simple is good but it still needs an update, so I hope that you will consider my latest offer.

Say hi from Cape Town to Luigi
