If CNN Money finds one of the worlds hottest startups in South Africa…

16 Comments 16 January 2007

…then why does South African media have to look outside our borders for fresh, innovative news?

CNN Money’s Business 2.0, The best business ideas in the world has found a South African website, yes a South African website, as one of the hottest startups in the world, yes the world, not the developing world or a certain segment of the world, the enitre F**** world.

One of the hottest startups in the World are from South Africa! Why have we not heard anything about it in the local press?

Because *some* journos need to be educated. How to educate teh South African media about world changing events happening right under their noses? Come to a Dinner with morethan 27 geeks or be educated at the WebPR+ Conference about Web 2.0 happening in Jozi, Cape Town and Durban.

You do not need to ask your boss to give you off to go to Web PR+, your employer should be paying for your ticket to Web PR+, paying for the time/travel at Web PR+ & bring him/her along too as you’re never to old to learn.

Back to one of the worlds hottest startups starting up here in South Africa. Can you guess what the hot startup is?

One of the Worlds hottest startups according to CNN Money is…. *dum roll* MUTI.CO.ZA We’ve been chatting to Neville Newey quite a bit recently & he is hard at work making it even better.

muti cnn money business 2.0

This is pretty old news, I posted about it back in August last year. Nevertheless it is still pretty significant although I think Muti will have to really grab a big slice of the local market before Digg etc decide to localise a site! Good luck to Muti, I’ll stick with ya!

TYFYC Dave – I read your post back in August and noticed something in the update you’ve made…

ALSO, and very importantly, the little hertfordshire based company I work for received a full 2 page article spread in the magazine, we were voted the 14th Best Business Idea in the World!!!!

If all the highly skilled African ppl, like yourself, came back, there’d be an entire issue of business2.0 dedicated to Africa. Why are you living in London? The weather, woman, food?

  • http://www.kiefpiet.co.za Tyler

Rafiq, I believe you don’t have to be in South Africa to make a difference with regards to anything online… It’s the internet, location means nothing really.

  • http://muti.co.za thakadu

Dave: Thanks for your comments and support for Muti!

Tyler: You are right, as far as development and location of servers go it doesn’t matter, but being away from home means we can’t attend the geek dinners, web conferences and so on and don’t get to rub shoulders with the others working in the area. Maybe at the next geek dinner we can web conference in :)

TYFYC Tyler, thakadu, Dave – this post & the comments demonstrate that which applies to any website: the content should engage the visitor & encourage an action to be taken.

Tyler, location means generated income flows to that location. South Africa needs the business to better the economic growth rate. So in effect, i hereby void your comment :)

The fact that what you say does hold some truth & hopefully more and more South African internet startups occur seeing as the playing field is global, which in turn relates to global revenue, in SA.

TYFYC Stefano – I believe thh CITI’s VeloCITI program is going to unveil some more South African startup gems. We’re going to be participating so stay tuned

Haha, Rafiq you probably chose (knowingly I’m sure) the 3 worst things about living in England.

I live here for fun, travel and global experience. Something a lot of South Africans miss out on.

Spot on Dave, even though this post& my comments might seem a bit harsh it’s all part of the many experiments im running on the blog… an idea,SEO, 2.0 sandbox of sorts.

Very cool. Had a chat with Neville myself. Nice guy. I wonder if Muti has a “trainer” engine for what you vote up and vote down? similar to reddit?

Must bloody help out with his logo like i promised :)
