17 Comments 16 February 2007

Sally Falkow

As president of Expansion Plus, Sally Falkow has been creating communication strategies for over 25 years. In 1999 Sally looked the exciting world of online in the eye and leapt forward head first.

Now considered as one of the leading Internet marketing strategists and an expert in social media: blogs, RSS feeds and content syndication; Sally has not only authored several books and lectured to university students and peers, she’s also mum to SA comedian extraordinaire Cokey Falkow – Sounds like we’re in for a very entertaining and insightful conference!

The number of you attending Web PR+ (A PR confernece on Web 2.0) nearly equals the 27Dinner list. The conference happens the a day before the 27Dinner on the 26th at the BMW Pavilion, Watrefront in Cape Town.
For more information see the WebPR+ : A PR conference for Web 2.0 site.

I wonder how long the general public is going to consider someone who knows a thing or 2.0 about web2.0 special and super clever etc…
It’s lame, these concepts are the fundamentals of the internet and just knowing what it is, what it does, how to integrate and implement it is not enough to get you booked out for a conference. There is nothing clever about knowing what web2.0 is, just as there is nothing clever about knowing what a mathematician does, to be clever, you need to actually ‘do the math’.
I’m not saying S.Falkow is not doing the math, but the way you present her makes it sound like the webPR+ conference is a waste of my time because I might as well stand in the mirror, speak to myself and then applaud, because as it sounds, I am going to be able to teach myself more than anything said at this conference.

    I’m sorry, but I don’t applaud mediocrity.

To be honest Stefano I would say that you have far less to gain from the conference that most people who are attending. But thats because you know so much more than the layman (and average PR person) about this stuff. Same goes for you Rafiq.
If you want a refund just give us a call.

TYFYC Stefano – If you look at the URI of this post you’ll notice why i posted it here. It was a test…

In steps Rob to do his (URI of this post) thing. TYFYC Rob :)

Stefano after an IM session or 2.0 we’ve discovered we’ve been at this www thing for about the same amount of time. I’d suggest giving your ticket to your superiors so they are able to value what you do for them even more. The Web PR+ conf focuses more on educating the miss/un/il informed about why they need to consider the www as in integral part of their overall business/PR/any strategy. Heck I know how & have a little knowledge of the why. As Bill Nye the science guy said: ‘Knowledge is Power’ We never know enough and when we think we do we need to think again.

  • http://sessa.wordpress.com Stefano

Fair enough. Rob, I am keen to check out what you guys have to say anyway. Will see if there is someone that needs this around the office. Otherwise, see you there :P

Why doesn’t she have a nose?

  • http://www.rafiq.za.net/blog Rafiq Phillips

TYFYC Tania – She doesn’t have a nose in the pic so that you have yet another reason to attend WEb Pr +: To see it :)

TYFYR, Rafiq. That is almost as logical as what the wolf said to Little Red Riding Hood.

This conference is about WebPR – how the technologies that evolved online have affected the practice of reputation management and public relations. It’s of interest to business people who are concerned about how the Net is impacting their business, whether they are an online concern or not.

I have been involved in PR for more than 25 years and actively “doing the math” for the last 8.

These concepts are an integral part of the Internet. Great that you are so well versed in them already. But many PR folk are not. So this is valuable info for them. I get injvited to speak at many industry events in the US and the UK. I routinely get “best session of the conference” remarks from attendees – we even got that at the last Search Insider conference for our social media and search panel. Search Insider is not even a PR event – it’s for SEO folk.

And I think Rob is right – you’d probably be wasting your time. But don’t write it off as mediocre when it has proven to be of value to others not as Net savvy as you are.

TYFYC Sally Falkow – Web PR+ is everything but a waste of anyones time. Yes it is geared toward business people but if a web worker does not consider their job as a business (they are their own brand) then they should definetly be attending. No matter how much you think you know you do not know everything. It is my mission to learn something new or a new perspective on something old as often as I can. Looking forward to learning from you at Web PR+ in Cape Town.

    PS: great blog.

  • http://sessa.wordpress.com Stefano

Fair enough, I was just hoping that there would at least be 1 session with something innovative and new, unheard of, experimental, out-of-the-box, TED-Talk’ish, controversial, elaborate, something interesting to people that ARE in the know. This way, you attract not only the general folk, but also the industry folk.

I am not saying WebPR+ is going to be a bullshit event, I am sure I will learn something new! I just wish there was something specific I could look forward too.

Either way, I am looking forward to the event. I’ll see ya’ll there.

Will give you sneak peak @ Web PR+ of the project were currently working on. Believe it or not, we do not always blog about everything :-P

    Looking forward :)

The challenge for ‘conferenciers’ (and I’m not lumping Quirk into this pool – they’re Web specialists) is attracting the widest audience possible.

Us Web 2.0 enthusiasts – the folks who read Rafiq’s blog – are NOT the target audience. We’re the evangelists. If you’re going to go be willing to be humble, contribute to the all-round conversation and you might learn something about translation – the real skill behind making Web 2.0 accessible (I’m giving Rafiq translation lessons at the mo :P )

  • http://www.rafiq.za.net/blog Rafiq Phillips

TYFYC Mike – Translation lessons much appreciated, i DO need them.

Looking at point 4 of your lessons learnt from Social Media Implementations post, these Web 2.0 enthusiasts are your #4′s within corporations. One of the tickets to Web PR+ booked via this blog was by one such enthusiast

They most likely have many job descriptions (or none at all) and live and breath the mechanism of the company they work for. They are inluential – not necessarily on the board – but have clout and can influence the highest level decision makers. They are smart and can see the big picture.

1ticket purchased by an enthusiast within a corporation has lead to 3 tickets being purchased by that particular corporation. before i start talking in code again, do you mind helping translate Mike, please. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the feedback on my proactive blog.

I am also the official blogger for Bulldog Reporter’s Daily Dog – an online resource for the PR industry in the US. I blog at Blog Business Consulting and at PRESSfeed. Keeps me out of mischief.

As to whether our content is same old, same old – I know Rob has something new up his sleeve that I am excited about and SA is not very savvy yet about using RSS as a PR and SEO tool.

So perhaps in addition to showing those unfamiliar with WebPR basics how to proceed, we can surprise you AddiCTs.

TYFYC Sally Falkow.. I actually picked up on that something new in this blogs stats, as its top secret, haven’t seen it yet. Lookign forward to it, I believe this Web AddiCT has some sort of idea what Quirks secret weapon could be, we’ll have to wait and see.
