Innovation, Open Source Web

Local Open Source Brilliance

5 Comments 18 February 2007

Mike Stopforth posted a blurb about FreeGeek and asked…

What a great idea. So who’s going to do it here?

tuxlabMikey, its already being done. Where do you think Your Web AddiCT comes from? If it wasn’t for initiatives like the Shuttleworth Foundation’s Schools’ Linux User Group would I be typing this right now? Let’s have a look at many previous posts.

When you thought 27 was being walloped the following comment was left:

I’d like to invite you to come along and volunteer with me one day when there will be an event again and see what open source is really about.

To which Mike Stopforth responded:

I appreciate your impulse to educate me, but am pretty confident I’m doing ok.

See you at 27, the spider-man costume is ready :)

Once again, Rafiq-y, you’ve proven just how smart you are.

But still, why didn’t you just explain the process in English without the code so that an ordinary luddite like me can understand.

Last comment – you’re talking about events. Free Geek is an ongoing non-profit interest – a full-blown company. I still don’t see the equivalent?

TYFYC Mike Stopforth – The reason for this post was not to prove how smart or not anyone is. It is to demonstrate many people often overlook local initiatives due to the fact that their magnifying glass is focused abroad causing them to miss things happening in their own back yards.

PS: if you read the links in the post you might thave noticed… Company grows out of schools linux project.

I’m not into spoon feeding you info, rather taking you on a journey of discovery.

If you took that journey you would have discovered that the company is Inkululeko Technologies

Rafiq you’re funny bru. I’m looking forward to your little speech at 27!

Nice post by the way and so true. I believe it’s a problem in most developing countries, we don’t trust what’s local – we think international is always better. This often isn’t the case because what’s developed locally takes our culture/heritage etc into consideration and is made for us by us.

    Awesome.
