South African Government switches to Open Source

2 Comments 22 February 2007

We’ve gotten a new Manuel for South Africa’s budget yesterday. Previous posts mentioned that South Africa Government lags in open source adoption and that Cape Town slashed it’s ICT budget. At long freaking last the South African Government changes to FOSS.

Cabinet has approved a policy and strategy to implement Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in government, government communications head Themba Maseko said on Thursday.

Current software to be migrated

“All new software developed for or by the government will be based on open standards and government will itself migrate current software to FOSS,” he told a media briefing at Parliament following Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.

How does this impact our business? it doesn’t really as we’ve built our business on Open Source and use open source. Maybe things like this wont be happening as often as it does in the future. Read more about SA Government’s swicth to Open Source here
