Why Standard Bank changed their tagline.

8 Comments 30 March 2007

Simpler. Better. Faster. Yeah right.

At 10:55 am Your Web AddiCT received the following message

Please collect your renewed Standard Bank card at N1 CITY Branch with your ID. If you have collected, thank you.

That card being a Mastercard, the key indgerdient to purchasing anything online. Discovered my curreent card was expired when playing cash test dummy on CherryPicka. CherryPicka is an awesome site btw :)

Inspired. Motivated. Involved. ? Got a call from standard bank credit card division nearly a month after my card had expired. Do not use my credit card that often, just one or 2 times a month but still, the Involved part of Inspired Motivated Involved means to me that that my bank is involved in my personal and business finaces. Inspired & Motivated to ensure that their are no hicups when it comes to banking.

The bank is a 5 minute drive from the office, another 5 minutes to find parking, 5 minutes to walk from car to bank, 20 mintues in the Q at Enquires, 5 mintues to looks for my card, 5 minutes on the phone with the credit card division asking about my card, 5 seconds to explain that I’ll be unable to collect my card today… Next Customer please.

If the card has NOT arrived at the branch yet, why did Standard Bank SMS me to pick it up?

Anyhow, Your Group of Web AddiCT(s); needs to open a new bank account for the new company that is in an early embrionic stage so thougth we could kill 2 bank account birds with one stone.

I’ve changed my mind. Can anyone suggest another bank to open a business account?

The reason I’ve blogged about this is that Standard bank have started listening AND responding to South African Bloggers. I hope I used all the phrases in order for their sniffer dogs (Online Reputation Management software) to pick up the scent of this post.

Rafiq, asking which bank to use is like asking what webhost to use!

All SA banks are useless, its just about finding the bank that YOU find a little less useless. ;-)

I do know SB run a couple of the very very large corporate customers, and they are mostly a business targeted bank… (Defza loves SB. I swear they pay him the way he carries on about them.. ;-) )

Personally I bank with ABSA… the bank I PERSONALLY find sucks a little less than others. Hey at least their Internet Banking works! (Ask Vincent Maher about FNB’s internet banking….)

TYFYC Jason – I’ve thought about this, waiting in the Q while watching the consutants doing what they do. I see them capture data, capture data & capture data most of the time. Something which most of us can already do, right now im capturing data. What I’d really like from a bank in South Africa is where you are able to start the process online and capture our own data. With an easy to search bank website that provides all the info your require to open a new account and allows you to start the process of entering all your data. I know it is possible for credit cards, thats how i got mine, all i had to do was pick the card up at the bank. If only it was possible to apply for a new business account this way. Maybe it is but the time spent finding info on a banks website takes just as long as going to the actual bank itself. Apply for new business account, capture your own busniess info, get an email with an appointment request at a specified date/time with a consultant to spend 5 minutes at the bank to sign the necessary documentation.

We do not need to be spoon-fed if we know what we want.

I have had good experiences with FNB, myself. I bank with Standard Bank on my personal side and FNB for my business. I am about to open another account for another business and I am going to do it with FNB.

Good call Rafiq. We are looking at moving banks as Standard Bank as given us grief, grey hairs and nightmares from Day 1.
It took 3 days to sort something out which they cant explain and no call backs from Heads of Divisions. Thinking of billing them for my time. Stay well away from Standard Bank!

Standard bank appears to be something that arose out of the ashes of the bank “fiasco” of a few years ago – banks everywhere going out of business, and losing customers money – use somebody that has been around for a while, like Bank of America. Standard bank is a “kid”, do you want to put your hard earned money in their hands????? I don’t think so.

I used to bank with Absa (personal) and moved over to FNB becaue of the charges and can’t care attitude of the staff and managers. Very happy with FNB (awesome internet banking and charges). Have my home loan with Standard – not bad service but very irritating marketing dept. Won’t stop bothering me with specials, new products, credit cards etc. Have my business with Nedbank. Friendly, helpful staff but their internal systems and internet banking are shocking. As a result it takes forever to get simple things done. Wouldn’t recommend them.

So my ratings: 1. FNB 2. Standard 3. ABSA and a no chance to Nedbank.

All this info is based on experiences in the last 2 years. I know this is an old post but others may find it interesting.
