Afrigator – Your Web AddiCT(s); first bite.

3 Comments 04 April 2007

Well, more of a nibble.

With Miguel on holiday for the next couple of days I’m going to keep this short and sweet.

With the Afrigator code embeded in the uncovering Afrigator in our feed stats post. Wasn’t to happy adding the ugly little button to the sidebar, actually spotted that ugly button on another local blog last week. It was ugly, didn’t even bother clicking.
Afrigator
They’ve changed the Afrigator button to something which I am proud display on every page. I am an African Blogger.

Have the same concerns as Hash over at White African though.

One thing that I don’t like about what both Amatomu and Afrigator are doing though is that you have to embed their code within your own website. I realize that the data mining from that is a HUGE opportunity for them, but personally I don’t like it. I’d like to see them do measurement on a more non-intrusive basis.

Have you read these yet?

Ah, glad somebody said it. I was also actually about to post about this.

For me it is mainly an efficiency issue. HTTP/1.1 has the advantage that one HTTP connection can be used to transfer multiple files, permitting that all those files are located on the same server. However, if you are fetching scripts and buttons from dozens of different servers, the efficiency on bandwidth (and especially in terms of latency) is actually quite bad.

Ideally you want all of the files necessary to display a webpage fetched from the same server.

Anyway, the new icon is simply too large for my blog. I’m removing it immediately.

Ok a couple of issues here. In Alpha we have no option but to use the code to give a rank but this will change. It will ultimately become a combination of traffic, rating, and links which will give a more accurate and non-intrusive ranking.

We also have 4 new variations (colour & size) of the button to accomodate users needs and this will be implemented in the next little bit.
