Radiohead Innovation, Stupidity or Publicity Stunt

6 Comments 04 October 2007

Radiohead have done something that has never been done before. Is it innovation, or naiive?

They’re selling their upcoming album In Rainbows independently via their website, aaaand you can choose how much you want to pay for it.

That’s right :) You can visit their website choose wether you want to pre-order the album in Discbox format, to be delivered to you before the 3rd of December 2007, or Download a copy, in which case you will be sent an activation code, which will only work starting the 10th October 2007; and when you go to checkout your order you can specify how much you want to pay for it.

Radiohead 2

This is legit, in case you were wondering. Check out their website here .

    That’s brilliant!

It is brilliant, and it will probably work for them. I’m rather more skeptical about this as a general model, however. It might work, but will people still pay once the novelty of a popular band that trusts its fans wears off?

I agree. This might be great at first, and you might find people actually will be honest and pay a reasonable amount for the album, but I don’t think it will work in general. People will start to take it for granted and just stop paying.

Makes for great publicity though :)

Very innovative, I can just imagine the publicity they are getting!

I think its a brilliant idea – if itunes can do it, why not? However im a bit skeptical if their pricing model will work out in the long run…
