9 Comments 08 October 2007

amAze is a new Free GPS navigation mapping tool that lets you easily Search or define any location by its address. In addition it allows users to view and navigate over high resolution satellite images.

amAze claims to be ” a first of its kind free navigation”. It is available free for download and use . Likewise it contains wide coverage of maps including aerial photos of South Africa, Europe, North America, Australia and parts of Asia.

Now that we know that you can download amAze’s satellite navigation for free , let us examine closely some of the advanced features it posses.

Well it does offer some very cool features which include:

  1. Visual and voice guidance to any destination.
  2. Search or define any location by its address.
  3. Present any required location on the map.
  4. View and use dynamic high quality maps at various scales.
  5. View and navigate over high resolution satellite images.
  6. Calculate the fastest way between two locations.
  7. Save and manage personal favourites list.
  8. Complete voice-guided navigation which can be achieved when the phone is paired with a Bluetooth GPS receiver

But amAze, doesn’t only offer a few but sophisticated features, it does have a helpful product if basic satellite navigation is what you really need. Free access to worldwide maps, which are pulled in ‘on-the-fly’ using GPRS for them travelling folks.

With very high-priced satellite navigations available South Africa that doesn’t even offer some of the capabilities that amAze is currently offering, it’s more important for people to know that they can now get it all for free on their mobile phones!

For more info checkout AmaZe’s website and let us all hope that amAze will turn out to be amAz’ing! :-)

Unfortunately you still need a GPS receiver. For phones without internal GPS (ie. pretty much all phones) you’ll need a bluetooth GPS receiver, which in SA is quite pricey. But yes – it does look like a cool app.

Cool post Yasser! Users can buy Bluetooth receivers for R499 by emailing david@amazegps.co.za and from Yale Security Point retail outlets.

I think R499 is a lot cheaper than the regular R2000 or whatever you would pay to get a standalone GPS device, although still not quite for me yet, as I don’t travel so much outside my city that I need a GPS as yet.

Yasser didn’t mention it, but the reason amAze is able to offer their service for free is because they inject location-based advertising into the GPS service. So, as you’re traveling you’d find nearby shops and whatnot come up that are advertising with amAze.

I think that, more than the GPS functionality, is innovative. Their are GPS services and devices all over the place, but I don’t know of any that have a location-based advertising system.
If I’m mistaken please let me know. It would be interesting to explore.

Will amAze be squashed when the Google phone steps up?

Well its all nice and free, and I use this software on my SE K800i/ Nokia 6234…But the problem is that you have to pay for GPRS while using it. I find changing the view into ‘arrows only’ saves airtime, but would prefer having built in maps….

Does anyone have any idea of how much data is used while using the internet connection of the phone? Also, anyone found a GPS cheaper than R700?
