Community Cloud Update

20 Comments 23 October 2007

I’m pretty stoked, the community cloud plugin I created for wordpress has been downloaded nearly at 200 time already! It’s doing pretty well so I thought I’d give it bit of an update and make it a little better. Here is what’s new in Community Cloud version 1.2

  • I’ve added sidebar widget, so now you can add the community cloud to your sidebar using the wordpress widget system rather than copying <?php echo cc_community_cloud(“<!–community cloud–>); ?> into the sidebar.php file.
  • You can also limit the number of commenters show up in the sidebar widget, in case you have a large community. So, perhaps you want to show the first 10, 25, 50, 100 or all commenters in the community cloud.
  • I’ve also added option of giving us some link love for creating the plugin. :) Not to worry though, you can disable the link back to us in the plugin options.
  • Before the community cloud only showed those commenters that have commented more than once. Now I’ve added the option to set your own comment threshold. So you can show first-time commenter in the cloud, or if you want only people who have commented over a certain number of times to appear in the community cloud if you have a very active blog.
  • And last, but not least, I’ve added an option for you to order your community cloud by most recent commenter to earliest, top commenter to lowest, and random (default)

Thanks all. Go and download it here.

Have you read these yet?

    It’s a fantastic plugin. I’ve not downloaded it yet, but will take a look at it the minute I have a chance.

    This is a great plugin, great way to mutually benefit both commentors and the blog they’re commenting on. Added incentive to add more comments. So here I am, commenting to be part of the list. :)

    Nice plugin, good job!
    I have few suggestions tho.
    1. Option for the separator between the names.
    In my case: Name1 . Name2 etc.
    is not as good as just Name1 Name2 etc.
    2. When there is no comment_author_url, e.g. the url is ” it will be better to print text only and not empty link (http://)

    That from me, keep the good work!

    3. The tooltip should include the number of comments too

    sorry bout that forgot to mension it at the previous post

    Thanks Casper for the feedback. If you download the latest version of the community cloud plugin v1.2.2 here, you’ll see I’ve made those updates you suggested.

    Great plugin, I do wish to use it but I need to deactivate it for awhile. Because i notice that it reduce the speed of page load. Font page take more time to download, it noticable.

    Hope you can improve this.

    Yes, its awesome, indeed! Works great with the latest changes!

    And another suggestion, since when you check “Display Authors with empty URLs” the names does not have the tooltip with the comments count.

    You can change the “Show Comment Count” option to radio buttons or dropdown box (whatever you like) with 2 choices:
    1. Show count as a tooltip – works like now
    2. Show count after the name – Name1 (count) [separator] Name2 (count) … etc. – you got my point.

    Finally, about the colors – when I leave the fields empty, maybe will be better if you dont set the default color to black, coz that will let the text to use the colors of the current theme (for the links and text)

    greets

    Thanks Casper, I get your meaning with the comment counts. I’ve seen it done with some other tag cloud features. I’ll sort that out when I get the time, I see the sense in it.
    I didn’t even realize about the color issue. I just copied those functions from the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin and treated in a black box manner. I’ll sort that out in the next revision of the plugin, along with the comment count adjustments

    Thanks for the feedback n-blue. I’ll look into optimizing the load time of the plugin. Keep posted.

    Thanks, Miguel dos Santos.
    I will keep waiting and recomment people to use your plugin.

    To note,
    The link in your plugin (to plugin pahe) leading to 404. You may correct this in next release.

    Ok, I’ve updated the plugin once more, v1.2.3.
    I updated the following mainly:
    * Allow comment count to display tooltip text, in the link, not at all
    * fixed font colors, so if you leave out max. font color and min. font color it falls back to your theme’s default link colors rather than reverting to black
    * removed old url validate function and replaced it with something more simple and quicker
    and other minor stuff here and there.
    Go download and check it out. Thanks

    Hello,
    and it don’t still work in my blog…I read all comments and I try to understand all this, I did all as you sed and still nothing…why???
    In my blog ther ar only 2 administrators, it is hdr experimental blog. We dont tested him yet. I would like so mutch this plug-in works car we will work at the community question…Have you some idea to help me, please?

  • http://www.miguel.co.za Miguel dos Santos

    Hi Anna, I’m not sure how you mean the community cloud doesn’t work? Looking at your blog I see in the left menu that the community cloud links are showing.
    I think it could be that perhaps there aren’t yet enough people who have commented on your blog to get the proper effect of the community cloud. Is that it or am I wrong?

  • Anna

    Thanks a lot, yes I was working in the nigt and finnaly it works! The problem results from the case of site’s urls of persons. If I marque in the options the case: show the cloud when the private site’s urls are not done, it works. If not, I have no the cloud. I have still problem to integrate the tag in one on the pages…

    Hello, we installed the plugin version 1.2.3 and we are facing performance problems, when activated the plugin performs many sqls instructions and the hp of the blog takes too much time to load. we tried to set the treshold higher but it seem to have no effect.

    I made a little hack that avoid doing SQL requests if there is no community cloud tag in content.
    In community_cloud.php
    Insert before line 26 : if (ereg (‘‘, $content)){
    Insert before line 77 : }

  • http://www.driczone.net/blog Dric

    Oops.
    Insert before line 26 : if (ereg (”, $content)){

    (+ add a ‘-’ in either side of ‘community cloud’)

  • http://www.driczone.net/blog Dric

    Raaaah !

    I meant :
    Insert before line 26 : if (ereg (”, $content)){

  • http://www.driczone.net/blog Dric

    Ok, the comments filters won.
    the first argument of ereg function has to be the tag used to insert community cloud in a page.
