Well v5.5 is here, Not many new features. the main one is the new inline typing mode.
You can type in a small box while still viewing your conversation. similar to Msn messenger or gtalk. Only downside to this is that T9 Or predictive text cannot be used in this mode.
Performance within MXit and on the MXit servers has been greatly improved, scrolling is alot faster and message sending and receiving.

The following features have been added:
1. Inline edit control:
This allows split screen messaging i.e. writing a message while still being able to see the current conversation screen.
It is disabled by default and can be enabled by settingMenu -> Settings -> Appearance -> Inline edit
Some limitations:
1. Predictive text is not supported.
2. Qwerty keypads are not supported.
3. There are a number of differences between the different manufacturers with regards to how text editing work. We have chosen a scheme that would be familiar to all Nokia, Sagem and LG users, namely:‘*’ – brings up the symbol menu
‘#’ – switches between input modes
‘0’ – is used to type spaces, except when in digit input modeTo make things a bit friendlier for other manufacturers this scheme is adjusted a bit:

This is a memory intensive process, so if your handset is on the edge it might not work.
3. Use popup menu for alerts and info messages and invites:
o This feature is only used for versions that uses full screen mode e.g. NOT for Motorolas.
o Error messages and invites are now displayed using popup menus to focus attention on them.
o Popup menu speed has also been tweaked a bit.Known issues:
1. While the inline edit control is active incoming messages do not scroll automatically.
2. Signed version cannot be download for Nokia 6230i, 8800.Phone support for V5.5
