Vodacom acting like Telkom. How stupid do you think we are?

View Comments 30 June 2008

Hang on, Telkom owns 50% of Vodacom. The bandwidth they’re (vodacom) charging us an arm and a leg for is being stolen to push idiotic Vodacom banners in our browsers. Screw you guys. Thank you. Come again. Read more about how Vodacom are stealing from us:

Vodacom injects Vlive banners into mobile sites.

Vodacom kills the services that use most of their bandwidth i.e killing all future revenue.

Can i has an Apple iPhone 3g pleaz?

Thanks to Andre Fourie for Sentient Communications for alerting me to this. Hey Vodacom how about stopping the Telkom act and encourage/stimulate innovation.

Vodacom stop killing your income tomorrow, by protecting business models of yesterday, today.

How to Kill the Vodacom Proxy?

So how can you bypass the proxy service?

It’s pretty easy, just follow this process:

  • Tools
  • Settings
  • Connection
  • Access points
  • Vodacom
  • Options
  • Advanced Settings
  • Remove the Proxy server address

Vodacom, Vodacum, Vodascum, time to hit getclosure.

Dear Rafiq Phillips

Your complaint has been forwarded to Vodacom. No further action from you is required at this stage. Either Vodacom or getclosure! will contact you by no later than Wednesday, 9th July 2008.

What a great way to put getclosure to the test :)

I could not agree more with you Rafiq!

    This whole thing stinks of

    1. Anti competitive behavior
    2. Spam
    3. and Theft

Lets hope someone like Google takes them on for this action. Or maybe a mass floor crossing can be organized to show support for the better connection!

  2. switched to opera mini fixed it … but hell this is so irritating.

  3. Tania says:

Rafiq, I am in the process of getting a new cell phone. Currently I am on pay-as-you-go with Vodacom on an old Nokia that can’t even take Mxit. I have been keen to take up Cell C’s latest special offer, which will give me a new Nokia Classic and a top-up contract which suits me well. But I am worried, because AFAIK Cell C buys its connectivity from Vodacom, and Nokia has become unreliable in other ways, such as having networks down occasionally and taking ages to send through SMSes (and then your friends think you are being rude because you aren’t replying to them).

    What network do YOU recommend?

With this proxy vodacom could determine exactly how many times thew banner was displayed, how much bandwidth it used and refund customers for wasting screen space on the small mobile phone screen.

  5. TYFYC Albert

I wonder how much time the friendly vodacom support staff spent on this issue… “Eh, Eehh, my MXit is not downloading…”

  6. The network that sends a few iPhone 3G‘s to Your Web AddiCT(s); to give away :)

Will it be Vodacom, MTN, Virgin or Cell C? :)

  7. Tania says:

An iPhone 3G? Icanlivewhitthat! My cousin is a buyer for Pep Stores so she travels quite a bit. She got caught in a cloudburst in Hong Kong and her phone died so she bought one of those there. She showed it to me. It is niiiiiiiice! I want one!

  8. Haydndup says:

Thanks for the heads-up on how to remove the banner! It was really annoying me, and like Albert, had switched to using Opera Mini.

    Thanks again! :-)

  9. I wonder if Vodacom are listening? Vincent Maher are you there yet?

  10. Emma Donovan says:

    Hi Rafiq,

I’m glad to hear that you are giving the getclosure! complaints management service a go! Hopefully you’ll get a prompt response from vodacom.

  11. I’m glad getclosure is responding unlike some other peter dude.

  12. I think Vincent Maher made a huge mistake leaving M&G for Vodacom.

Vodacom’s ideas about innovation seems to lead to a FUBAR situation.

  13. Stii says:

Richard, I think Vodacom realises that and thats why they’ve invested in Vincent. I believe Vince can pull that around for them. :) I guess time will tell, hey?
