The ‘real’ (non-OPA) top 10 mobile sites in South Africa

View Comments 25 November 2009

Opera state of the Mobile Web have just released their October 2009 results and in it are the top 10 websites visited by users of operamini. Opera Mini happens to be the number one browser on mobile in South Africa. Unlike the OPA results which are a bit biased IMHO You Web AddiCT trusts the top 10 sites as by Opera Mini more than it does the OPA results. Why? Opera’s results include international heavyweights that almost everyone, my mom included, uses. There is also no need for a tracking code to have your mobile results measured by Opera Mini.

  • Page-view growth since October 2008: 407.8%
  • Unique-user growth since October 2008: 111.6%
  • Page-views per user: 357
  • Data (compressed) transferred per user (MB): 4
  • Data (compressed) transferred per page view (KB): 12
  • Gmail is back on the list after a 1-month absence.

Here are the top 10 mobile sites in South Africa according to Opera :

  1. Facebook
  2. Google
  3. Wikipedia
  4. my.opera.com
  5. momac.net
  6. yahoo.com
  7. MXit.com
  8. zamob (previously knows as WapTrick)
  9. Gmail
  10. Getjar

Continue reading this post to find The Top 10 Mobile Websites in South Africa according to the OPA and the Top 10 Mobile phones in South Africa according to Opera Mini.

The Top 10 Mobile Websites in South Africa according to the OPA

  1. Laduma Soccer
  2. 24.com (they have a Google Android app too)
  3. Supersport
  4. MMS Cards
  5. Jobmail
  6. Times Mobile
  7. Kick Off SA
  8. MyBoradband
  9. Junk Mail
  10. BlueWorld (send free SMS from mobile works!)

If you look at the number of  Unique Monthly Visitors of the number 1 OPA mobile site and compare it too the number of mobile web users in South Africa it just doesn’t add up. If this blog, Web AddiCT(s);, were a member of the OPA we’d be just outside the top 10 for mobile traffic alone.

  1. no soccer laduma in opera stats? interesting, also no gumtree or news24

seems this list is funny, and not funny haha

  2. TYFYC @myphotographer. I think both list are a bit off but they are better than having no lists at all

I agree, but I think you should make another list a guestimate if you will combining both reports.

    http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries/ZA

I would troll the top 40 SA sites to see who has mobile representation and chances are these will be the top 10.

    Thanks for info

  4. Rich says:

if i read your post right the opera list shows only the biggest sites browsed from opera mini enabled mobile phones, Admob says that the Samsung E250 is the most widely used phone in SA as far as mobile web browsing goes and that does not run opera mini and so do many other phones so that might account for the irregularity?
Saying that however I dont trust the OPA stats either! :-)
