Twitter SMS notifications for Africa… no, the wwworld

7 Comments 19 January 2010

sms gateway providerSome ideas are easier to implement than others. A short while ago the wwworld SMS mobile app idea was shared with you with as much detail as possible. The idea behind wwworld SMS: a mobile application that’ll allow a user to send SMS text messages via the web using your mobile phone in the form of a mobile application that interfaces with an SMS gateway provider.

I guess that is easier said than done. A few days a ago I tweeted:

Twitter Direct Message to SMS using this would be cool http://bit.ly/8pQbDU

and within a few days @diekloon (igeek) responded

Working on my twitter dm to sms service, just a view bugs to iron out. Got the idea from @rafiq

With it a new International Twitter to SMS provider was born called twesms…

@twesms available at TweSMS.com allows you to receive your direct messages as an SMS. Twitter currently does not support SMS delivery to South Africa (or the rest of Africa), but with TweSMS you can now have your twitter notifications delivered straight to your cellphone. Thanks to Clickatell’s coverage of 800 networks in 220 countries you are able to receive your DM’s as an SMS almost anywhere in the world.

TweSMS is still in Alpha phase and thus registration is only by invite. If you are interested to help test out TweSMS send a email to TweSMS and we will consider adding you to the program. If you are interested in the TweSMS service and would like to stay updated follow us on twitter @twesms. TweSMS is a free service while in Alpha testing, but in future users will have to buy sms credits or we will try and get the sms sponsored to allow a free service.

Rafiq gave me a cool idea, what if users could use their own clickatell accounts to send out smses. Just had a look, its feasible but a bit advanced for the avarage user as it requires you to set up a API in you clickatell control panel. Maybe an option for the more advanced.

If you guys have any ideas/feature requests please feel free to comment.

I wonder how twitter earns to pay for its expenses. Is it via sms charges they get from telecoms companies?
