DSTV on Demand is here!

11 Comments 05 May 2010

Before we read about DSTV on demand let’s first set the scene with this post by Rich from Capitalist Punks

So here’s my hypothesis…

Koos Bekker’s a smart dude, he realises – like pretty much all other smart dudes – that the future is in content, or more specifically, video-on-demand.

Now Koos has a great vehicle for VoD in DSTV, but he recognises a huge constraint – bandwidth, not the speed of it, but the cost (or perceived cost). A month ago, the biggest consideration when downloading a movie was not the speed of the download, but the amount of data it would take from your valuable bandwidth cap.

So how does he play it?

Well he sees that he has a ace in his sleeve in Mweb. So a few weeks ago Mweb were the first to market with an uncapped product. Nice. Of course it doesn’t solve Koos’s problem just yet, as of course not all DSTV subscribers are on Mweb. However he just had to sit back and wait (and not for long at all).

Enter his Mweb competitors, they immediately jumped on the bandwagon, not only going uncapped – but driving prices even further down.

Does Koos care? Hell no, he’s ecstatic – even if Mweb doesn’t make a cent profit from the move they have absolutely served their purpose. Basically, SA’s ISPs just became Koos’s new bitches.

It makes me laugh really, hahahaha <– see.

Six months from now (or a year, who knows?) when Koos is ready, he can launch his constraint free VoD product because all connected South Africans, regardless of their ISP, have ceased to have a bandwidth cap problem.

It makes me respect the players like the Skyroves and ISs of the world that have had the patience and smarts not to jump on the bandwagon. If history is anything to go by, I imagine when guys like that do make their move, we’ll see something different and ass-kicking.

Anyway, like I said, Koos Bekker; smart dude…!

This post was written about 2 months ago. Rich might have thought we’d wait 6 months before we saw DSTV on Demand but it’s already here :) Yet another reason to get MWEB uncapped ADSL :) Click here for all the DSTV on demand info you’ll need…

Clever, you need to have an mweb adsl account first, until other service providers “meet our technical requirements” i.e. Just long enough to lock all the suckers* in with an mweb only adsl router.

*Yes, I’m one of those suckers with an mweb account already.

its always been here for over a year now ppl with premium and pvr could benefit from this. so its “official” now but its nothing new. i would have to agree with you that koos is one smart dude :D however if they(ISP’S) cant even provide decent QOS with “normal” internet usage what kind of experience are expecting from dstvOD surely they cant expect us to be too enthusiastic!

Do you have an MWEB only ADSL router? Didn’t know devices like that existed

Only time will tell, do you have access to DSTV VOD?

never bothered with it due obv. bandwidth reasons, however I’ve not yet been suckered into getting uncapped YET ;) i just realized if the content is hosted locally then the this might not be such a bad thing – however local bandwidth has always been “reasonably” priced so why wait for blended uncapped before launching this product? – doesn’t make sense to me… i feel like im having a debate with myself here lol

Yip, the free one you get when you sign up is locked to Mweb, you can flash the firmware etc etc, but it’s not an easy fix.

While he manipulates the Less than a million ADSL market he might want to plug the holes his 2.6 million satellite market. Why? 1. Competition, 2. Obsolete Mpeg2 decoders 3. The cost of premium Sport just doubled. Oh did I mention that advertising revenues in both print and broadcast media is tumbling. He will certainly be a master juggler if he can continue the growth of the past. From a consumer perspective its great nobodies pulling my strings!

Is there going to be some hardware with this deal? And when will it be available on other ISP’s?
