Top 10 Mobile Phones in South Africa

7 Comments 26 November 2010

This is a follow up to the Top 10 Mobile Websites in South Africa… I have overheard many conversations from local companies and web entrepreneurs wanting to build iPhone or Google Android applications. Even a radio ad or 2 prompting user to download their iPhone app. How many of those individuals who actually hear your radio ad actually have iPhones? I’ve pretty impressed with what Motribe are doing by harnessing the native web to reach the users without the need for an app. To reach the developing wwworld and the millions of users who are browsing the web via a browsers like Opera Mini your app has to work in a browser. These are the top 10 mobile devices according to Opera Mini for October 2010

  1. Nokia 5130 XpressMusic
  2. Nokia 2700c
  3. Nokia 2330c
  4. Samsung GT-S5233a “Star”
  5. Samsung SGH-E250
  6. Nokia 5000d
  7. Sony Ericsson W205
  8. Nokia 7100s
  9. LG KS360
  10. Samsung SGH-M620

Does your Web app work on those mobile phones?

Have you read these yet?

Believe it or not, the Samsung SGH-E250 is a popular phone used in phone as a modem internet connections.

Rafiq is right, I had two of them (E250) , I gave them away and now they are serving the evil purpose they were built for.

This reporting is flawed as it’s opera browser biased, it only shows data for phones that use opera browser. This means that data is skewed away from android and iPhone. Stats about hand set usabge from vodacom or Admod would help paint a better picture.

Can you point me to where I can find this Admob or Vodacom data on phone usage in South Africa?

i think the samsung wave with the new bada OS will soon be up on this list
