Back in 2008 when founder of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg, was in Cape Town for WordCamp my wwworld changed like it never has before. So much so that I didn’t write a blog post about WordCamp Cape Town 2008 and didn’t go online for 3 whole weeks afterwards. For those you who remember what I’m talking about

WordCamp is back this year so it’s time for bloggers and those who build their businesses in and around the WordPress eco-system to come together to connect, share and inspire.

Where is Wordcamp Cape Town 2011?

What is WordCamp?

WordCamp is a conference that focuses on everything WordPress. WordCamps are informal, community-organized events that are put together by WordPress users like you. Everyone from casual users to core developers participate, share ideas, and get to know each other.

The History of WordCamp…

The first WordCamp was organized in San Francisco by Matt Mullenweg in 2006.

Since then, local communities around the world have organized over a hundred WordCamps, and we anticipate that number will pass a thousand within the next couple of years.

So what is a WordCamp? WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress, the free and open source personal publishing software that powers over 25 million sites on the web. WordCamps come in all different flavors, based on the local communities that produce them, but in general, WordCamps include sessions on how to use WordPress more effectively, beginning plugin and theme development, advanced techniques, security, etc. To get an idea of the types of sessions typically seen at WordCamps, check out the WordCamp channel at WordPress.tv.

Coldplay are performing at Cape Town Stadium on 5 October 2011. Great, can walk to the venue. It’s is organised by the usually pathetic Big CONcerts and tickets are available via the ticketing company known for a damn awful booking engine that always collapses and crashes on days new tickets come out. You know them as Computicket. I believe Computicket need to learn about Cloud Computing and the benefits it could have to their systems. It’s Coldplay, I don’t care who the opening acts are, battled through the Computicket booking process and do not have any expectations from Big Concerts but I am very much looking forward to the concert.

On Thursday evening we checked into the Nu Metro Canal Walk to see a preview of X-men: First Class. A first for me was that we had to check our mobile phones upon entry, they were kept outside the cinema. A security guard said that with today’s high-pixel-count camera phones, rather cameras that also function as phones, anyone sitting in the audience could illegally record the movie. I don’t think there is anyone who hasn’t seen a cam copy. What is a Cam copy?

A copy made in a cinema using a camcorder, possibly mounted on a tripod. The sound source is the camera microphone. Cam rips can quickly appear online after the first preview or premiere of the film. The quality ranges from terrible to very good, depending on the group of persons performing the recording and the resolution of the camera used. The main disadvantage of this is the sound quality. The microphone does not only record the sound from the movie, but also the background sound in the cinema. The camera can also record movements of the audience in the theater, for instance, when someone stands up in front of the screen.

If you’re like me, and have seen all the other movies in the X-Men franchise, the new xmen movie will answer many questions you may have had Why it isn’t available in 3D remains a mystery to many but it is still worth watching. Thanks to Nu Metro for making the screening possible.

What is TEDx?

TEDx Cape Town 2011

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxCapeTown, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxCapeTown event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

On another TED note…

TED announced today at SXSW that it is opening all of its online talks to the public. An application programming interface (API) will allow open access to all talks and associated data (topic, location, speaker, etc.) for developers who might use that info to build all sorts of tools and applications.
Speaking before her announcement at TED, June Cohen, Executive Producer of Media for TED, told Fast Company that in keeping with the organization’s promise of transparency, “The natural next step is to open up content to the developer community…. Every time we’ve allowed people to contribute, people have surprised and humbled and delighted us.” More to the point, she says, “We know we don’t have the monopology on good ideas.”

Living Labs Global Award 2011

Cape Town is one of the participating cities in the Living Labs Global Award 2011. Living Labs Global is a non-profit association based in Copenhagen (Denmark) with the objective to promote innovation in services and mobility in cities.

Cape Town is looking to establish a new type of Venture Capital Fund on the African continent that is geared towards indigenous entrepreneurs’ who use technology to create innovative solutions for Africa’s challenges.

By using new technologies and funding systems such as micro-credits, community finance, social networks and open data systems entirely new ways of connecting investors and entrepreneurs may be found. If successful, these entrepreneurs will become the employers of tomorrow, provide real solutions and give investors healthy returns. Africa is the world’s newest market and has in excess of 1 billion people.

Entrants are requested to submit a Showcase detailing their solution.

The eight winners of the Living Labs Global Award will be invited to pilot their solutions in these cities, proving the effectiveness of new solutions and offering a first step for innovative providers to enter new markets.

Several oil companies hope to prospect the Karoo for natural gas using suspect methodologies which have farmers and townsfolk alike up in arms. The latest developments suggest the department of minerals is willing to put the prospecting process on hold – a concession that is nowhere near enough to placate the growing numbers of people opposed to Karoo fracking. via Daily Maverick.

Energy giant Royal Dutch Shell is targeting potential untapped shale gas reserves in coal-hungry South Africa where landowners – including a Dutch princess – are readying for a showdown.

Shell applied in December to explore 90 000 square kilometres — twice the size of Denmark — for gas deposits in the clay-like shale rock of the arid central Karoo.

“The shale gas potential is quite high, because there is a high volume of shale and therefore the potential for gas development is very big,” said Jenny Marot of the state’s Petroleum Agency SA (PASA).

But more than 200 people want the application dropped, including landowner Dutch Princess Irene, due to environmental concerns and the use of hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” to release viable deposits if discovered.
