The Chamber has had calls from accountants trying to meet the 28 February tax return deadline, from bakers who say that there will be no bread very soon, from cold storage facilities whose stocks are compromised, from fish companies who have lost millions in spoilt goods, from manufacturers who are losing tens of thousands a day in lost production and damage to equipment, from employees on commission who are losing their income, and from many, many other businesses who are feeling the effects of the blackouts.

And the situation is going to continue well into the weekend.

This afternoon, Chamber executive director Albert Schuitmaker met with other business organisations, the CEO of Eskom and City officials at a meeting convened by Premier Ebrahim Rasool. The outcomes of the discussions were as follows:

  • Koeberg is only likely to reach full capacity by Saturday evening – if they get the go ahead to start up again on Friday. The startup takes around 30 hours.
  • It was agreed that safety issues could not be compromised in restoring Koeberg’s operation
  • The City and Eskom undertook to provide schedules of outages and will try to stick to them
  • The Cape Town CBD will not be affected by outages, except possibly for the Salt River substation
  • Power will be cut to industrial, commercial and residential areas in accordance with the schedules. Eskom’s schedule for the next day should be ready by 2pm and the Chamber will communicate this to you.
  • The Province, City, Eskom and stakeholders will meet again in 10 days time after investigations into the Koeberg problems have taken place

You are urged to try to conserve electricity as much as possible. (The Premier reported that on Sunday and Monday there was a reduction in demand, but by Tuesday the consumption was back to normal).

And a message from Metrorail : Eskom has assured Metrorail that track electricity will be maintained and there will be no disruption to the service.

Below are the schedules supplied by Eskom and the City for tomorrow, 23 February 2006.
