Web Developers in Cape Town: The demand is greater than the supply…

Would you not agree?

I posted my resume(CV) back in 2003 on the job site that have big billboards along the highways and have been getting calls/emails from some of you who read this blog, those who do not and recruitment companies at least once a month for the past two years. The calls seem to be on the increase and morethan enough projects are pouring in to keep Miguel and I busy for quite some time.
Houston we have a problem. Where have all the OS web developers gone? Could it be the lack of official training?
PS: We’re hiring too.

There are a number of issues I see.

1. I have to second the lack of training aspect. Where in CT do you go for training? CTI is a joke, I.T. business campus hasn’t got a clue, and the only decent place, Netscope, costs more money than an entry level car.

2. Decent developers are very hard to come by. The companies looking, either don’t want to pay the the salary that the decent developers deserve, or the developers don’t want to work for these one dimensional software companies that are tied into these long-term corporate contracts.

Would strongly agree with point 1 and 2. From a personal perspective, point #2 is so true. I was at ’employed’ by a co that couldn’t afford to pay a basic salary, the question is how these companies can not afford 2 pay us what we deserve. With the way the world is changing what we do is so much more cost effective than the ‘old school’ (read expensive) way of doing things? Some people do not see the big picture.

The second half of point 2 is also true for me. I was never as miserable at doing something I love as when I was employed, but I’d blame my personality for that and not the company. There are a few I wouldn’t mind working for & they know who they are 😉 This is just too much fun at the moment. Every day is an adventure.

Every department has a budget, because thats how all corporates work, but our Group CEO has always told us that, if the I.T. department goes over budget, so what. When we ask, we get. But on the flipside, we have proven our worth, 10 fold. So it’s also an issue of trust.

As you say, companies should pay developers what they deserve, and being penny wise but pound foolish, will always cost you in the long run. And thats the crux of the matter. Hire 10 junior VB developers and you’ll get nowhere fast. But hire 3 top-notch okes that cost more than the 10 juniors put together, and you’ll always see results. But some people will never see this. Ask Dimension data. They have around 100 developers – of which 85% of them are NOT productive…

Hi, hope your daughter got into a good institution. I have attended New Horizons a good few years ago, not quite sure how their standards are now though.I too am looking at furthering my web development knowledge, but where to go is not easy to discover. Most of what I learnt, was through reading up and extensive use of the internet resources. Rafiq, what or which institutions can u recommend? I know my basic html and just did a crash course in PHP, very basic stuff though.

Look; guys I was also looking at studying with IT Business Campus, but clearly from most of the comments posted up on this board it would go as to say that this institution is just one of those that just get established for extorting the people, cause if a concern is that they’re teaching old technologies at this day and age still; clearly they dont have people who know what they’re lecturing! I never got the proper chance of checking the college out myself yet(the one in Braamfontein, Johannesburg); but I was strongly discouraged about this college by really trustworthy individuals who know thier ways around the ICT expertly.
Me personally, would rather advice you guys to check institutions like UNISA and Technikon SA out for their course they offer (but apparently most than average companies tend to take up students from CTI into their employs cause their courses are ‘properly’ aligned with the advent technologies- but be carefull that sort of reputation does not come any cheaper, they (CTI) are said to be one of the most expensive training institutes in the country). But any other than that; does anyone in Jo’burg know any college apart from CTI and CTU that offer credible and well renowned training that is affordable?
