Local computer shop woes

So this morning I boot up your Web AddiCT(s); pc & to my surprise, no Internet access 🙁

Miguel & Nicole we’re happily working but my box did not want to play nice. Hop to the console & su ifconfig … no IP address. Our wirless router is fine, wireless internet fine, everything else but my PC, fine.

My initial thought was that the ethernet card/network card was bust as this was the case a few months ago. So after testing different network cables & swopping around a cable here & a cable there with Miguel & Nicole it was decides that we purchase a new ethernet card.

The closest, quickest & easiest place to get this was N1 City Mall. Haven’t been there in years, Miguel assusres me that there are 2 computer shops I’ll be able to find one near entrance X near supermarket Y.

From the outside N1City looks very different since the last time I have been there (to watch the lion king), they’ve constructed many, many parking bays. Park near entrance X,walk through supermarket Y & find the computer shop.

As I urgently wanted to get back to the office I walk straight to the 1st person that could look like they could assist me.

Your Web AddiCT: “Good morning, I need a network card please.”

1st Assistant: (funny look on her face) “Ummm…. does it maybe have a other name?”

Your Web AddiCT: “Yes an Ethernet Card or NIC maybe.”

1st assistant: (funny look, raising an eyebrow) “Wait, let me ask ***** quickly.”
She escorts me to a woman eating a sandwich behind the counter, we wait for her to finish chewing.

Your Web AddiCT: “Hi, I’m looking for an ethernet card”

2nd assistant: (with food between her teeth :-D) “I don’t know if we have those things but we have got this wireless network cards over there.”

She points me to the wirless network cards and right next to the wirless network cards & on the same shelf as the wirelss network card a bright green sticker “ETHERNET CARD”

While driving to N1 City I was thinking about asking these people about the availability of a Notebook/laptop with no operating System or a laptop with Linux pre-installed.

I have found that I am not the only person in South Africa searching for a laptop with without proprietary software. With my desktop ‘crashing’ this search has become more urgent. HELP!
