Thanks to the web and exponential tech development both of these are possible without owning a physical book or meeting anyone AFK. All the books from everywhere is a “Hey Google” away and we’re able to meet anyone, from anywhere, digitally. Real life is better though.

I recall immersing myself in RSS with Google Reader (RIP) and cognitive lesrning through instant messaging some really smart folks through (MXit, also RIP) when this post was originally published in 2006. Learning, as I am at 5.24am on a Saturday morning, every day.

Change before the internet: You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.

1999: You will be the same person in five years as you are today except fort the people you (m)IRC and the RSS feeds you read.

2004: You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you instant message and the blogroll you read.

2009: You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you poke and the Facebook News feed you read.

2014: You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you DM and the Twiter you read.

2019: You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people on your bitcoin payment channels and the Artificial Intelligence you’ll seed.
