As you know, finding a notebook with any Linux distro in South Africa or without Windows pre-installed is easier said than done.

Read this on the Direct 2 Dell blog :

As part of an overall effort to update our Linux program, today we are announcing a partnership with Canonical to offer Ubuntu on select consumer desktop and notebook products.

An awesome example of how Web 2.0 is being used by large corporates & shaping the future of not only software but hardware aswell.

Gavin Slevin, Dell’s Mobile brand manager, called & emailed. We shared an idea or 2.0. Got the familiar ‘that has never been done before’ response but he did pass me on to another department of Dell. The idea actually fits into 3 differnt departments within the Dell oraganisation. An innovation mash-up or something out of the box trying to be squeezed into a box?

Anyhow, just sent through another version of the idea (version 2.0?) to the Dell Foundation. Gavin Slevin passed the idea onto the Dell Foundation. It fits here too.

One of the cornerstones of Dell’s success lies in their belief that by improving social conditions within our country, they can improve business conditions.

What was the Dell of an Idea? Will let you know as soon as we’ve received feedback. For now, enjoy the Video of Mark Shuttleworth telling the ubuntu linux story over at the Dell blog.
