MXit. Dead yet? May It Rest In Peace. 👐 Web AddiCT 🇿🇦

The writing is on the wall for MXit, in South Africa anyways. Or the writing has been on the wall for a long time, nobody was really noticing. Have a look at the Google trends graph above. mxit youth day 2go another mobile instant messaging app has more interest than Mxit has today. It was fun while it lasted. I’ve met some of the most interesting people who have worked at MXit but it appears thing have been going downhill ever since word-of-mouth powered WhatsApp and the well funded WeChat hit our shores. There may be other reasons too.

What will be the next big thing from South Africa to make the world notice? What else, in your opinion, except Whatsapp caused mxit to flounder?

Several things sadly. Some super smart people have been through that company.
The two problems that stand out to me are;
1. A total failure to quickly adapt to new emerging phone platforms.
2. Shocking branding / marketing, what I mean by that is they built a service, not a great brand. Great brands create an emotional bond that can help them weather a storm of change. If you have a service anyone can just make it better and then you’re dead in the water. Basically Mxit was partly killed by people thinking it was uncool compared to Facebook / Whatsapp etc.

Good day Captain Chris. Thanks for your comment. I agree some super smart people have been through that company and some brilliant people are still there. I used to share ideas with the Mxit team frequently but the 2 way communication flow from those inside and outside quickly changed to Vanilla Pres Releases when there were some other changes occurring within the company. I really enjoyed driving through to Stellenbosch to catch up and often shared ideas and be inspired by their progress frequently. I used to be emotionally attached to their successes but it’s as if there aren’t many to speak of any longer. Then again, what do I know? not much any more. I still hope they can rise from the ashes like a phoenix..
