The selfie phenomenon has just been upgraded with the introduction of Selfie Stick to the South African market by Selfie Sticks South Africa. What exactly is a Selfie Stick you may be wondering. Simply put, it’s an extendable Monopod, think one leg of a tripod camera stand with a clasp for you smart phone. The second part of the deviceย isย a bluetooth shutter remote for you to take take the selfie without being able to reach your camera which is now your arm length + 1.1mย away. You are now able to capture a pic of yourself and the surrounding background with much more control. Maybe we should just call them looooong arm selfies?

Playing around with the Selfie Stick got me thinking to when I’ve taken them in the past. The answer isย very seldom. One memory that remains is when Carte Blanche, every South African’s this-is-the-end-of-the-weekend tv show followed me around for a few days in 2008. Years before selfie was a word, before instagram existed and Nokia was still a dominant and leading mobile phone manufacturer. Can you remember those days? I do, ‘cos it was when I took one of my first ever selfies. A selfie that was seen by a few hundred thousand South Africans, they just didn’t know what they were seeing yet. It was six years ago. Here is the video clip of me taking a selfie as captured by Carte Blanche. Skip to 3:06 to see it. I’d also suggest muting the video as what you see is the way we use the web today. What is said is LMFAO-worthy).

Here’s the selfie with Charl Norman & I posted to flickr with an app called Shozu (what happened to them?) on 2 Feb 2008 using a Nokia N70.
Selfie?
